TRANSPARENT NOISE BARRIER PANEL SYSTEM

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1      SUMMARY

A.   The CONTRACTOR shall furnish materials and labor to build a sound barrier wall as indicated on Drawings and specified herein. The wall system shall be complete including design and installation of the foundation, supporting tie beams, posts, panels and all accessories to provide sound wall incompliance with all local and state Codes and meets all the criteria included in this Specification and related sections.

1.3      QUALITY ASSURANCE

A.   Comply with  governing codes  and  regulations.    Provide products  of  acceptable manufacturer’s, which have been in satisfactory use in similar service for ten years.  Use experienced installers.   Deliver, handle, and store materials in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

B.   The  manufacturer  shall  provide  facilities  and  qualified  personnel  to  perform  all specified  test  and  maintain  an  acceptable  quality  control  program.  An  acceptable program is one that meets the requirements of QS 9000 and ISO 9002. To ensure total quality, manufacturer shall provide proof of compliance for the production noise barrier panels.

C.  Mock-Ups: Provide mock-up as required to demonstrate quality of workmanship.

1.4      DESIGN CRITERIA

A.   Drilled Piers: As specified in Section 02373, Drilled Piers

B.   Seismic Load: As specified in Section 01332, Seismic Design Data.

C.  As specified in Section 01334, Wind Design Data.

D.  Structural components of the noise barrier shall be designed in accordance with the1989 edition,  incorporating 1992  and  2002  amendments, of  the  AASHTO Guide Specification for Structural Design of Noise Barriers (working stress design).

E.   A minimum 15-foot-high barrier shall be constructed along the east and south sides of the entire odor control system area, as illustrated on Drawings. The required height is relative to the finished elevation of the concrete pad on which the odor control equipment is installed. The barrier shall have a minimum STC rating of 35 and shall be sound- absorptive on the side facing the odor control fans, scrubbers, and carbon absorbers. The sound-absorptive side of the barrier shall provide the following minimum octave band sound absorption coefficients:

125 Hz: 0.33
250 Hz: 0.79
500 Hz: 1.00
1 Hz: 1.00
2 Hz: 1.00
4 Hz: 0.82
NRC: 1.00  

F.   There shall be no openings or penetrations of any kind in the portion of the barrier along the east side of the odor control area. The beginning of the barrier should be sealed to the exterior of the centrifuge building so that noise cannot leak between the barrier and the building and a door from the same materials shall be provided. Gaps or openings for drainage shall not be permitted in the barrier. The sound-absorptive side of the panel material shall be oriented towards the odor control equipment.

1.5      SUBMITTALS

A.   Submittals shall be made in accordance with the General Requirements, Additional General Requirements and as specified herein.

B.   Fabrication and Layout Drawings for the Wall Including:

1.   Dimensions and  location of  the foundation piers, wall posts, tie beams and panels.

2.   Plan and sections indicating wall thickness at each elevation and material.

3.   Materials of construction data sheets and/or catalog cuts.

4.   Structure steel shape sizes, mounting and joint details and locations.

5.   Panel material mounting details, sealant, accessories and packing material and locations.

6.   Shop drawings for drilled piers and concrete beams.

7.   Shop drawings for steel reinforcement.

C.  Engineering design calculations of the complete wall system signed by a Civil or Structural Engineer registered in the State of California.

D. Complete information on panel material including STC rating chart and sound absorption performance.

E.   Installation instructions and details.

F.   Certification to certify that the wall design is incompliance with all the specified criteria included here in and all local and State Codes.

1.6      WARRANTY

A.   Manufacturer W arranty against Material and Workmanship Defects:   5 years full warranty. Warranty period shall start from the day of beneficial occupancy.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1      ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURERS

A.   Subject to compliance with the Contract Documents, the following manufacturers are acceptable:

1.   Evonik Cyro LLC

2.   QUILITE International

3.   Or Equal

2.2      MATERIALS

A. The wall design indicated on the Drawings and specified herein is based on PARAGLAS SOUNDSTOP Noise Barrier Sheet, product by Evonik Cyro LLC. Other manufacturers and materials shall be evaluated for Or Equal based on compliance with the design criteria and performance and characteristics of the specified system

B.   Anchor Bolts:

1.   ASTM A307, ASTM A36, Or Equal, galvanized steel.

2.   Embedment details to be developed by manufacturer upon receipt of acceptance of wall shop drawings from the ENGINEER.

C.  Fasteners:

1.   Wall Panels: Stainless steel.

2.   Miscellaneous Fasteners: Corrosion resistant.

D.  Any structural member to be hot-dipped galvanized shall be minimum 12 gauge thickness.

E.   Wall Panel Posts: Steel.

F.   Grout: See Division 3.

G.  Closures: Neoprene.

H.  Sealants: See Specification section 07900, Joint Sealants.

I.    Panels:  The transparent noise barrier shall be a rigid monolithic sheet, comply with all requirements of this specification section.

1.   The transparent noise barrier shall be of appropriate thickness (15mm, 20mm, or 25mm) to meet the specification requirements based on the design wind load, panel size, and fixture methods employed.

2.   Color: Clear (colorless)

3.   The tolerance on length and width dimensions shall be -0 inch, +0.25 inch.

4.   Performance Characteristics

(f)   Resistance to weathering: After exposure to outdoor weathering for a period of ten (10) years or accelerated weathering in accordance with ASTM G155 for a period of 10,000 hours, the transparent noise barrier panel shall show no evidence of cracking.

J.   Impact Resistance:

a.   The transparent noise barrier shall meet the requirements of EN 1794-1.

b.   The transparent noise barrier shall meet the requirements of ANSI Z97.1 as a safety glazing material.

c.   The transparent noise barrier shall pass the large missile impact test, ASTM E1996-97/02.

K.   Wind Load Resistance:

1.   The maximum elastic deflection under the design wind load shall be less than 3 inches.

2.   When a load factor of 1.5 is applied to the design wind load:
a.   The sheet shall not show any symptoms of failure such as buckling or cracks.
b.   The sheet shall not become detached from its supports or fittings.

L.   Resistance to Roadside Chemicals:

1.   The transparent noise barrier shall be resistant to standard de-ice chemicals such as: Calcium Chloride, Magnesium Chloride, Potassium Acetate, Calcium/Magnesium Acetate and Sodium Acetate.

M.  Resistance to Fungi:

1.   The transparent noise barrier shall undergo testing in accordance with ASTM G21 and have zero rating, show no signs of fungi growth, after the standard 28 day test period.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1      INSTALLATION

A.   Install products in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

1.   Install tolerances in accordance with AISC Code of Standard Practice. a.   Install products straight without bowing, sagging, or warping.

2.   Install all fasteners.

3.   Install base plates on grout bed.
a.   Grout bed to be 1 inch thick unless noted otherwise on the Drawings.

B.   Install wall panels to supporting structure with exposed fasteners.

C.  Install  window  frames,  trim  and  other  miscellaneous  items  in  accordance  with manufacturer's instructions and details.

D.  System shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturers’ recommendations and consistent with the installation manual provided.

E.   The noise barrier shall be installed without any gaps unless planned.

F.   Installation shall be  coordinate with  work  of  other  sections; provide inserts  and templates as needed.

G.  Install Work plumb and level with uniform appearance.

H.  Restore damaged finishes and protects Work.

3.2      ADJUSTING AND CLEANING

A.    Touch up paint any scratched factory finished surfaces or remove and replace as directed by ENGINEER.

B.    Remove and replace any damaged wall or roof panels, frames, etc., as directed by
ENGINEER.
