SECTION 15440 PLUMBING FIXTURES


This spec was part of the Des Plaines, IL River WRF project that bid Feb 26, 2015.

SECTION 15440 PLUMBING FIXTURES
PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. This Section includes plumbing fixtures and related components.

1.2 DEFINITIONS

A. Accessible Fixture: Plumbing fixture that can be approached, entered, and used by people with disabilities.

B. Fitting: Device that controls flow of water into or out of plumbing fixture. Fittings specified in this Section include supplies and stops, faucets and spouts, showerheads and drains and tailpieces, and traps and waste pipes. Piping and general-duty valves are included where indicated.

1.3 SUBMITTALS

A. Product Data: Include selected fixture and trim, fittings, accessories, appliances, ap- purtenances, equipment, and supports and indicate materials and finishes, dimensions, construction details, and flow-control rates for each type of fixture indicated.

1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Source Limitations: Obtain plumbing fixtures, faucets, and other components of each category through one source from a single manufacturer.

1. Exception: If fixtures, faucets, or other components are not available from a sin- gle manufacturer, obtain similar products from other manufacturers specified for that category.

B. Regulatory Requirements: Comply with requirements in ICC A117.1, "Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities" about plumbing fixtures for people with disabilities.

C. Regulatory Requirements: Comply with requirements in Public Law 102-486, "Energy Policy Act," about water flow and consumption rates for plumbing fixtures.

D. NSF Standard: Comply with NSF 61, "Drinking Water System Components--Health Effects," for fixture materials that will be in contact with potable water.

E. Select combinations of fixtures and trim, faucets, fittings, and other components that are compatible.

F. Comply with the following applicable standards and other requirements specified for plumbing fixtures:

1. Vitreous-China Fixtures: ASME A112.19.2M.

2. Water-Closet, Flushometer Tank Trim:  ASSE 1037.

G. Comply with the following applicable standards and other requirements specified for lavatory and sink faucets:

1. Backflow Protection Devices for Faucets with Hose-Thread Outlet: ASME A112.18.3M.

2. Faucet Hose:  ASTM D 3901.

3. Faucets: ASME A112.18.1M.

4. Hose-Coupling Threads:  ASME B1.20.7.

5. NSF Materials:  NSF 61.

6. Pipe Threads: ASME B1.20.1.

7. Supply and Drain Fittings: ASME A112.18.1M.

H. Comply with the following applicable standards and other requirements specified for miscellaneous fittings:

1. Atmospheric Vacuum Breakers:  ASSE 1001.

2. Brass and Copper Supplies: ASME A112.18.1M.

3. Plastic Tubular Fittings and Piping:  ASTM F 409.

4. Tubular Brass Drainage Fittings and Piping:  ASME A112.18.1M.

I. Comply with the following applicable standards and other requirements specified for miscellaneous components:

1. Floor Drains:  ASME A112.21.1M.

2. Off-Floor Fixture Supports: ASME A112.6.1M.

3. Pipe Threads: ASME B1.20.1.

4. Plastic Toilet Seats:  ANSI Z124.5.

5. Supply and Drain Protective Shielding Guards:  ICC A117.1.


1.5 COORDINATION

A. Coordinate roughing-in and final plumbing fixture locations, and verify that fixtures can be installed to comply with original design and referenced standards.


PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 MANUFACTURERS

A. Fixture descriptions establish fixture type, quality, materials, features and size. Prod- ucts of the following manufacturers determined to be equal by the Engineer will be ac- cepted:

1. Water Closets and Lavatories – Kohler, American Standard.

2. Service Sinks – Elkay.

3. Water Closet Seats - Bemis, Kohler, Olsonite.

4. Faucets, Sink - Chicago Faucet, Kohler, Elkay

5. Faucets, Lavatory - Chicago Faucet, Kohler

6. Drains, Supplies and Stops - Brass Craft, Chicago, Kohler, Zurn

7. Traps - American Standard, Kohler, McGuire.

8. Carriers and Supports - Ancon, Josam, Jay R. Smith, Wade, Zurn.

2.2 FIXTURE SUPPORTS

A. Lavatory Support: Type II, lavatory carrier with concealed arms and tie rod. Include steel uprights with feet.

1. Available Manufacturers:
a. J.R. Smith Manufacturing Co.
b. Zurn

2.3 PLUMBING FIXTURES

A. Coordinate finishes and colors of all exposed fixtures, faucets and trim with Architect.

B. See plumbing schedule on plans for specific fixture requirements and specifications.

2.4 PROTECTIVE SHIELDING GUARDS

A. Protective Shielding Guard,: Manufactured, plastic enclosure for covering for hot- and cold-water supplies and trap and drain piping and complying with ADA requirements.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Examine roughing-in for water soil and for waste piping systems and supports to verify actual locations and sizes of piping connections and that locations and types of supports match those indicated, before plumbing fixture installation. Use manufacturer's rough- ing-in data if roughing-in data are not indicated.

B. Examine walls, floors, and cabinets for suitable conditions where fixtures are to be in- stalled.

C. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.2 FIXTURE INSTALLATION

A. Assemble fixtures, trim, fittings, and other components according to manufacturers' written instructions.

B. For wall-hanging fixtures, install off-floor supports affixed to building substrate.

1. Use carrier supports without waste fitting for fixtures with tubular waste piping.

2. Use chair-type carrier supports with rectangular steel uprights for accessible fix- tures.

C. Install floor-mounting fixtures on closet flanges or other attachments to piping or build- ing substrate.

D. Install wall-hanging fixtures with tubular waste piping attached to supports.

E. Install fixtures level and plumb according to manufacturers' written instructions and roughing-in drawings.

F. Install water-supply piping with stop on each supply to each fixture to be connected to water distribution piping. Attach supplies to supports or substrate within pipe spaces behind fixtures. Install stops in locations where they can be easily reached for opera- tion.

1. Exception:  Use ball, gate, or globe valve if stops are not specified with fixture. Refer to Division 15 Section "Valves" for general-duty valves.

G. Install trap and tubular waste piping on drain outlet of each fixture to be directly con- nected to sanitary drainage system.

H. Install tubular waste piping on drain outlet of each fixture to be indirectly connected to drainage system.

I. Install tanks for accessible, tank-type water closets with lever handle mounted on wide side of compartment.

J. Install toilet seats on water closets.

K. Install water-supply, flow-control fittings with specified flow rates in fixture supplies at stop valves.

L. Install faucet, flow-control fittings with specified flow rates and patterns in faucet spouts if faucets are not available with required rates and patterns. Include adapters if required.

M. Install traps on fixture outlets.

1. Exception:  Omit trap on fixtures with integral traps.

N. Install escutcheons at piping wall-ceiling penetrations in exposed, finished locations and within cabinets and millwork. Use deep-pattern escutcheons if required to conceal protruding fittings. Refer to Division 15 Section "Basic Plumbing Materials and Meth- ods" for escutcheons.

O. Seal joints between fixtures and walls, floors, and counters using sanitary-type, one- part, mildew-resistant, silicone sealant. Match sealant color to fixture color. Refer to Division 7 Section "Joint Sealants" for sealant and installation requirements.

3.3 CONNECTIONS

A. Piping installation requirements are specified in other Division 15 Sections. Drawings indicate general arrangement of piping, fittings, and specialties.

B. Connect water supplies from water distribution piping to fixtures.

C. Connect drain piping from fixtures to drainage piping.

D. Supply and Waste Connections to Plumbing Fixtures: Connect fixtures with water supplies, stops, risers, traps, and waste piping. Use size fittings required to match fix- tures. Connect to plumbing piping.

E. Supply and Waste Connections to Fixtures and Equipment Specified in Other Sections: Connect fixtures and equipment with water supplies, stops, risers, traps, and waste pip- ing specified. Use size fittings required to match fixtures and equipment. Connect to plumbing piping.

3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Verify that installed fixtures are categories and types specified for locations where in- stalled.

B. Check that fixtures are complete with trim, faucets, fittings, and other specified com- ponents.

C. Inspect installed fixtures for damage. Replace damaged fixtures and components.

D. Test installed fixtures after water systems are pressurized for proper operation. Replace malfunctioning fixtures and components, then retest. Repeat procedure until units op- erate properly.

3.5 ADJUSTING

A. Operate and adjust faucets and controls.   Replace damaged and malfunctioning fix- tures, fittings, and controls.

B. Adjust water pressure at faucets to produce proper flow and stream.

C. Replace washers and seals of leaking and dripping faucets and stops.

3.6 CLEANING

A. Clean fixtures, faucets, and other fittings with manufacturers' recommended cleaning methods and materials.  Do the following:

1. Remove faucet spouts and strainers, remove sediment and debris, and reinstall strainers and spouts.

2. Remove sediment and debris from drains.

3.7 PROTECTION

A. Provide protective covering for installed fixtures and fittings.

B. Do not allow use of fixtures for temporary facilities unless approved in writing by Owner.
