SECTION 16857 ELECTRIC PIPE TRACING

This spec was part of the Des Plaines, IL River WRF project that bid Feb 26, 2015.


SECTION 16857 ELECTRIC PIPE TRACING


PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 RELATED REQUIREMENTS

A. Applicable provisions of Division 0 and Division 1 shall govern work under this section.

1.2 DESCRIPTION

A. Provide a heat tape system with control equipment, installed and tested in place, to provide freeze protection of process piping as shown on the drawings.

1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Provide a complete pipe tracing cable system capable of maintaining pipe at a temperature of 5?C. when the outside ambient temperature is -35?C. with a 20 mph wind.

B. Requirements of Regulatory Agencies:
1. National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) chapter 70 - National Electrical Code (NEC) and Wisconsin amendments thereto.
2. Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc., (UL).

C. Reference Standards of the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA).


PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURERS

A. Chemelex, Div. of Raychem Corp.

B. Nelson Electric Division of General Signal

C. Or equal

2.2 MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT

A. Provide cable with the proper fittings and appurtenances for field connection of the system to the conduit and wiring without the need for procurement of special fittings or wiring devices.

B. Voltage: 120V

C. Circuit Design:
1. Parallel design, current flow across cable.

2. Capable of overlapping itself without creation of hot spots.
3. Cut to any length in field.
4. Self-regulating heat output.
5. 40-year operational lifetime.
6. Braided metallic shield.
7. Outer plastic jacket.

D. Provide ammeter or an indicating light local to each heat trace branch circuit, to indicate availability of A.C. power.


PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 INSPECTION

A. Examine areas and conditions under which pipe tracing cables are to be installed and notify ENGINEER in writing of conditions detrimental to proper and timely completion of the work. Do not proceed with the work until satisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.2 INSTALLATION

A. Install pipe tracing cables as specified and/or indicated on drawings and applied in accordance with manufacturer's written instructions.

B. Coordinate circuit connection points with electrical drawings.

C. Provide the appropriate type and thickness of insulation and U.V.-resistant, weather- protective wrapping over all exposed piping sections requiring tracing.

3.3 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Examine material for defects prior to installation.

B. Examine final installation for damage and defects in workmanship prior to start-up and installation of insulation.

C. Prior to installation of insulation, start up pipe tracing system and check for temperature increase over full length of each tracing cable.
